Myopia Clinic FAQ's
Myopia, or nearsightedness, is a condition where distant objects appear blurry. It occurs when the eye grows too long or the cornea is too curved, causing light to focus in front of the retina instead of directly on it.
Myopia progression can be controlled using several methods such as low-dose atropine eye drops, orthokeratology (overnight rigid contact lenses), myopia control glasses, and lifestyle changes like increasing outdoor activities and reducing screen time.
While mild myopia is common and easily correctable with glasses, progressive or high myopia can increase the risk of serious eye problems such as retinal detachment, glaucoma, or macular degeneration later in life.
Children should have their first comprehensive eye exam by age 3, and regularly thereafter. If there is a family history of myopia or signs of poor vision, earlier and more frequent checkups are recommended.
There is no permanent cure for myopia. However, it can be managed effectively through glasses, contact lenses, or refractive surgery in adulthood. Myopia control in children focuses on slowing progression to reduce future complications.
